Nomad Newsletter January 2008

Sussex Nomads Newsletter

The General Does it Again! – Xmas 10 16th December 2007

So after we all had chipped the ice off our tri-bars, the serious business of deciding who is the quickest TT'er in the club was set. It has to be said that the Valks had a strange way of warming up for this event. They spent all their time putting on as many layers as possible, which left them no time to actually warm up on their bikes. I’m sure Paul had at least 5 pairs of arm warmers on!,

Mark, as usual, was taking it very seriously (full TT bike and disk), while Geoff Smith decided only to use his tri spokes and full TT bike. A wide variety of machines were on show, with 3 brave mountain bikers taking on our course. There was also a battle of the Gents, with Sara keen to show her mother how it should be done.

So Mark won, but Geoff was quick as well. It could have been so different of Geoff hadn’t slowed down to chat to John on the way round. But the end result is yet another trophy for Mark “The General” Paton.

Who can stop him on the 5?

There were 15 starters and the results were as follows:

Debbie Gent - 37.27
Sara Gent - 35.57
John Crowley/Scott Millard - 44.15
Geoff Smith - 26.05
Paul Valks - 30.46
Michael Valks - 26.45
Kevin Traylen - 35.50
Rupert Rivett - 28.38
Peter Bickland - 38.22
Stuart Edmonds / Steve Bock - 31.10
Michael Thyer 28.27
Mark Paton - 25.47
Tony Burnham - 30.57 "

The Website – a big thank you goes to our IT experts (Adam and Daniel) for switching the website. This was essential, as the old site was costing us a lot of money but Daniel had found a low cost solution to carry on this valuable communication tool. I would encourage you all to use the website and news can be submitted through the “Submit News” section.

Social (Co-ordinator Hazel Crowley 01444 235344)

A big thank you to Hazel for organising the Nomad 30th B’day celebrations and the Xmas Mince Pie run. As she has had other things on her mind recently, let’s try and contact her (it will make a change) concerning the Annual Dinner on the 2nd February. Two star speakers have been lined up for this event, so I would suggest that you get your tickets organised early.

Annual Dinner – the Mid Sussex golf club has been booked again for the 2nd February 2008. Let Hazel know if you can attend.

Hill Climb

Adrian did a great job organising the SCA Hillclimb. The event was strongly supported by the Nomads, who either turned out to either ride or marshall this event. Being a Steyning Bostal novice, I was unsure what to expect when I was sitting on the start line. All I can tell you is that it hurt, but that it won’t stop me entering the 2008 event which we are organising again.

A big thanks goes to Hazel, Lorna Edmonds and Jan Morris for sorting out the tea and cakes.

The important times were as follows:

Position Name Club Time
1 Chris McNamara Wildside RT 4:02.4
2 Peter Tadros Ingear Quickvit RT 4:07.7
3 Adrian Rodgers Worthing Excel 4:11.5
8 Michael Valks Sussex Nomads 4:48.1
11 Geoff Smith VC Etiole 5:10.4
13 Daniel Hyndman Sussex Nomads 5:23.7
15 Stuart Edmonds Sussex Nomads 5:43.9
17 Rupert Rivett Sussex Nomads 6:17.7
18 Katherine Mason Sussex Nomads 6:26.0
19 Gordon Pain Sussex Nomads 6:34.1

Geoff Smith won the Veterans Hill Climb Championship and Katherine won the Ladies Hill Climb Championship. Well done to both and hopefully both will be defending their trophies next year.

Club Runs (Co-ordinator Graham Seymour 01825 722145)

The club runs that are already planned for the forthcoming weeks are detailed below.

Date Tea Stop Notes
6th January Motorbike Shop/Cafe, Station Road, Horam
13th January Southwater Country Park
20th January Lakeside café, Holmes Hill (A22)
27th January Steyning (Corner of High Street/Church Road)
3rd February Heaven’s Farm, Danehill
10th February Balcombe Tea Rooms
17th February Club 5 Mile TT, Pyecombe (1)
24th February Glynbourne Tea Rooms
24th February The Rivett Inter Club Ride (2)
2nd March Surrey Hills (3)

(1) Tea stop as usual at Washbrooks Farm afterwards.

(2) Rupert is trying to organise a combined Club Run for the local cycling clubs. The exact format isn’t known yet but details will be released nearer the time. Reserve this date in your diary.

(3) Please note that this Club Run will start at Faygate, between the Crawley and Horsham Road at 9.15 AM.

Time Trialing

The first real test of the year is just round the corner. Yes, the 5 mile TT is nearly upon us and you haven’t got long before we all know who’s actually the quickest. Expect people to turn up on their TT bikes but this course also suits road bikes.

There are lots of questions that need answering. Will Michael Valks beat Mark? Will Adam beat everybody? Can Stuart beat Rupert? Will Ade remember the course? What time will Michael Thyer post now he has a road bike? How quick will Geoff Smith be and could he beat the course record?

This is a great fun event and I would encourage you all to take part. You might surprise yourself and claim a scalp or two. This event will start at 9.00 and meet as usual at Pyecombe. I would suggest that any new members who want to do this event check the course/meeting place with one of us before the day.

Importantly, I suggest we all meet up at Washbrooks Farm afterwards for a debrief and a refreshing cup of tea.

Training Group (Coach – Dan Bennett 0779 1209927

email –enquiries@progressivecyclecoaching.co.uk)

Turbo Training – the turn out before Xmas was very disappointing and it would appear that you weren’t convinced about Dan’s new TT session. Personally, I found them excellent but they will now revert to a usual TT session. Your support is needed, as we cannot continue to run these nights if they are not supported.

These start again on the 3rd Jan at the Ditchling Sports Pavilion. These will be held on each Thursday at 7.00 PM. Cost - £3.50 per person

Winter Training Camp - It looks like Coach Dan is taking our training very seriously this year. The plan is to hold a one/two week training camp in somewhere warm between 15th – 29th March 2008. Contact Dan for further details.

Drinks/ Power Bars – have you ordered your Torq drinks/power bars yet for the Training Group Rides? If you haven’t, contact Dan as soon as possible.

I-Magic - The Club’s I-Magic can be rented on a monthly basis for a fee of £10. If you are interested, please contact Dan for further details.
Dear Member,

It’s that time of year again, membership subscriptions are due again on the 1st October 2007. Detailed below are the various membership options, together with the costs of each. Please indicate which type of membership you require and return the form, together with an appropriate cheque made payable to Sussex Nomads CC, to Stuart Edmonds, 15 Farr Close, Cuckfield, West Sussex, RH17 5HS.

We also find this process useful to update our membership contact details. Could you indicate whether you require a 2008 CTT Handbook and whether you are a member of either the BCF or CTC. The latter is required, as we require confirmation that you hold appropriate third party insurance (which membership of either institute provides).
Club Kit Order June 2007

Hi All

I hope to compile an order sheet very soon, you may be aware I have samples available and some prices but price list is incomplete, I am waiting for Paul Hazelton at Kalas to supply me with a more comprehensive price list for our club design. He has assured me that once he has received our order it will only take 5 weeks to produce, and they pride themselves at Kalas for not delivering late. In the mean time if you could relay this information to as many of the members as possible ( not all read e-mails ), and all can have a preview of the items available at www.kalaswear.com and the range to look at is Team Pro range.
You will notice from their web site that prices are not shown, but Paul has the list of items that I think we are likely to order, and will be sending the price information based on 20 tops and 20 bottoms hopefully we can achieve these quantities, below that number they may cost a bit more.
Please will you forward this message to as many members as possible, as I always seem to have problems connecting to the Nomad website
Regards
Adrian
07 TT and Road Race Programme meeting Thursday 18th January

Hi all,

This Thursday at 7pm instead of the turbo night we will be aiming to get the races for time trial and road racing down for this year.

Please all make it as it will be vital that all of us are aware of the top priority races, practice races and training races we would like to enter.

If you could have a think about last years races and bring along an idea of the races you would like to enter through out the year, we can start from there.

Looking forward to seeing you all.
